• It's easier just to use the same company that their family has always used. After all, that requires no effort whatsoever.

Some companies offer car insurance discounts for any one of a number of things - for having antitheft devices, air bags, having had driver's education, going five years without an accident, having more than one vehicle, wearing seat belts, and more. The list of discounts is a long one, but you won't know if you don't shop.
• They are not aware that rates can vary dramatically from one company to another. Companies are out to make money, and some are more aggressive about their pricing than others.
• They don't realize that not all coverage is the same. Sometimes, people don't realize that they have inadequate coverage until they are in an accident. By then, it's too late. When buying protection, you not only want to make sure that you don't pay too much, you also want to make sure that you are adequately covered. If you don't have enough coverage, you might as well not bother.
